The Temple of the Sun “Huaca del Sol” is the largest structure in the territory of modern Peru, which was erected long before the ships of Christopher Columbus reached the lands of South America.
The pyramid is 228 meters long, 140 meters wide and 41 meters high. According to experts, during the construction of the temple, more than 130 million units of adobe bricks were laid. Even after Peru was conquered by the conquistadors, the Pyramid of the Sun was an order of magnitude superior to the Catholic sanctuaries existing at that time. Next to the Huaca del Sol is another majestic temple – the Temple of the Moon Huaca de la Luna.
Once the Pyramid of the Sun consisted of 7 tiers, the transitions between which were large slopes, steep steps and walls at a 77-degree slope. For more than 15 centuries, the pyramid suffered inevitable destruction. Alas, as a result of them, today the once majestic temple is a giant pile of bricks covered with sand. Several graves discovered there by archaeologists suggest that the Temple of the Sun served as a place intended for funeral ceremonies.
