Ustyuzhna is a town and the administrative center of Ustyuzhensky District in Vologda Oblast, Russia, located on the Mologa River, 260 kilometers west of Vologda, the administrative center of the oblast.
The history of it dates back to 1252 and begins with the development of metallurgical industry on the territory of Rus.
On the right-bank side of the city, stone dwelling houses and mansions of the late 19th – early 20th centuries, as well as wooden houses with a mezzanine, decorated with saw-cut and multi-layer overhead carvings, have been preserved.
Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin
The five-domed octahedral Church of the Annunciation with side-chapels and a bell tower is located not far from Cathedral Square. Before the construction of the stone church in 1690-1694, several churches were replaced at this place. The first wooden church, built at the expense of the parishioners of the posad, appeared here during the reign of John IV. Until 1935, the church remained active. In 1936-1937, a flour warehouse was set up there. In 1958, the Annunciation Church was transferred to the museum. In the second half of the 70s, the restoration of the temple began.
Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin
The five-domed Cathedral was built in 1685-1690. in the so-called Moscow style. Acting. The interior is well preserved: wall paintings, stucco molding, a five-tiered iconostasis of the late 17th century with 95 icons made by masters from the Armory workshops.
