The occupation of the territory by German troops in 1941-1943 caused serious damage to the national economy of the region. More than 11,000 residents of the Great Patriotic War, that is, every seventh inhabitant of the region, died or were killed on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. Dozens of villages were destroyed, and it was impossible to restore them. The remains of 16516 soldiers and officers of the Red Army are buried in 31 military graves of the region.
