Kologriv located in the northeast of the Kostroma region, at a distance of 640 km from Moscow.
Kologriv was founded as a fortress on the high right bank of Unzhi next to the Arkhangelsky graveyard. The fortress then stood in a completely different place, upstream of the river and it was called Okologrivye, that is, located at a high ridge, between ravines. In 1778, the village of Kichino was renamed into the county town of Kologriv, Kostroma province. In 1779, the city received a coat of arms, and in 1781 a city plan was approved, which was never fully implemented.
