New Nikolsky Cathedral (1802-1814)

The project of the temple was developed by the Moscow architect, a student of Matvey Kazakov, Alexei Bakarev. For the construction of the New Nikolsky Cathedral, the fortress Nikolsky gates and the gateway church were used. It was decided to build the cathedral in the neo-Gothic style. The Vozvdizhensky chapel was dismantled to the ground and rebuilt in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow”. The gates of the fortress are covered with brickwork on both sides. The bell tower was dismantled, like the old five-domed, and instead a rotunda-dome was erected with four “Moorish” turrets in the corners. A new multi-tiered bell tower with a high spire was added to the west. The construction of the cathedral lasted from 1802 to 1814.
