One of the villages where the Volga Germans lived, Saratov region.
The Volga Germans are one of the peoples that formed in Russia by the beginning of the 20th century from the descendants of immigrants, mainly from the German states, settled on the basis of the manifestos of Catherine II in the Lower Volga region in the 1760s and lived there until 1941. After the October Revolution of 1917, they received territorial autonomy – the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of the Volga Germans. In 1941, after the German attack on the USSR, they were deported to Siberia and Kazakhstan. The deportation of the Germans led to the decline of the national language and culture, to accelerated assimilation with the rest of the population of the USSR. The consequences of the deportation caused the emergence of the resettlement movement to Germany, which especially intensified in the 1990s.
